Celebrity journalist Richard Wilkins and his son Christian Wilkins have just released their new podcast, The Apple and The Tree, which delves into the private lives of Australia’s most famous families. The first episode features a tear-jerking conversation with The Veronicas, Jess and Lisa Origliasso, about their late mother Colleen and their enduring musical bond.
Richard Wilkins has been a fixture in the entertainment industry for decades, and Christian, a rising star in his own right, has been learning the ropes from his dad. The duo’s chemistry is undeniable, and their podcast promises to be a refreshing take on celebrity interviews.
In an exclusive interview with 9Honey, Richard revealed that their subjects open up about topics others might shy away from because they feel safe with the Wilkins. “We want to get personal, but we’ve never abused the privilege. We’ve never crossed that line,” Richard emphasized.
The podcast’s first episode focuses on The Veronicas’ emotional journey following the passing of their mother, Colleen. Richard and Christian sat down with the sisters at their home, and the conversation quickly turned emotional. “In the first 10 minutes we were talking about their beautiful mother, everyone’s tearing up, it was just gorgeous,” Richard recalled.
Christian highlighted the unique bond they share with their guests, saying, “It’s really just conversations that we would have with our friends. There just happens to be microphones around.” This approach has already yielded some memorable moments, including a hilarious exchange with Cold Chisel legend Jimmy Barnes when he “hijacked” Richard’s opening monologue.
Upcoming guests include a diverse range of Australian celebrities, from Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin to Kylie and Dannii Minogue. Christian is even hoping to secure an episode with Beyoncé and Solange Knowles in the future. “We’ve been lucky to have such incredible friends, and we want to share those conversations with the world,” Christian said.
Richard was full of praise for his son’s interviewing skills, saying, “Hearing Christian asking questions that I just wouldn’t have thought of … that makes your heart sing, to realize he’s so clever at what he does. It’s great when your kids grow their own wings, and you see them fly.”
